Friends of St. Michael's Hospice

Formed in 1989 by Valerie Buckley, The Friends of St. Michael’s Hospice continues to generate vital income to support St. Michael’s Hospice today.

These funds contribute towards maintaining the excellent standard of palliative care for which the Hospice is renowned.

The years have seen members come and go but an original few still play a vital role more than 30 years later. Today, the Friends are as committed to their fundraising activities as ever and organise a wide variety of annual events. These events are organised and run by the Friends and form a vital lifeline of valuable funds raised for the Hospice. With scheduled events taking place throughout the year, the Friends not only provide financial support but also spread awareness and goodwill for the Hospice amongst the community. The aim of the Friends has always been to organise fabulous, affordable and entertaining events, including, talks, auctions, lunches, tournaments, gift fairs, and sports events – to name but a few. Such is the high standard and reputation of these events that tickets always sell out fast!

Our Annual Events

The Mattingley Tennis at Cheam School

July

This annual tennis tournament has been running for over 7 years and takes place during early July and is an eagerly anticipated social event for kids!

Around 200 children aged from 12-15 years compete in mixed doubles on various local tennis courts all culminating with tea and prize giving at Cheam School. As well as a great way for children to meet, it also provides them with a valuable introduction to the Hospice and the great work that it does within the community.

The Farleigh Wallop Clay Shoot

September

The clay pigeon shoot at Farleigh House, Farleigh Wallop by kind invitation of Viscount Lymington and Chris Allen, has been running for 30 years.

The happy day has evolved and grown and now there are a minimum of 30 teams (4 guns in each) competing for Best Team, Best Individual, Winner of the Knat Challenge and Winner of the Flush. The day starts promptly at 9am with bacon butties and coffee in the Estate’s beautiful barns.  The guns then go to the field to start a friendly competitive morning of shooting run by Cavendish Events. Lunch back in the barn is a hearty plate of hog roast and salads followed by legendry treacle tart and chocolate brownies. The day ends with prize giving and a sweepstake.

Golf at Windlesham Golf Club

September

The Friends of St. Michael’s Hospice Golf Day has been generously hosted by Peter and Jane Lumley at Windlesham Golf Club since 2011.

We have regularly enjoyed the support of the local golfing fraternity for what has become a much anticipated annual event held in September each year. The format has developed over the years and teams of four are invited to play a Texas Scramble round with prizes for the top two teams. There are also prizes for the “Nearest the Pin”, “Straightest Drive” and “Beat the Pro” for both the men and the ladies! The Golf Day begins when the teams register from 11am and enjoy the most delicious brunch in the Orangery. They then continue out onto the course for 18 holes of competitive golf. Whilst the score cards are calculated, the teams unwind in the clubhouse where our fabulous raffle is on display. The grand finale is our marvellous prize giving complete with drinks and canapes. We would like to thank all those golfers who have been such steadfast supporters of this event.
